Anger and frustration. We heard a lot of this from those anchoring healthcare ecosystems. Directed at vendor lock-in of data and identity layers, because it threatens their whole clinical research and delivery ecosystem. That lock-in is:
- keeping costs up,
- stifling innovation,
- promoting medtech winner-take-all monoculture, and
- making questionable the billions invested annually in vendors’ proprietary control over clinical data, device security, and device behavior.
WiderPoV: The privacy and personal data control social movements (“privacy by design”, “let my data go”, “my data is part of my person”) will be among the cudgels used to bring vendors into more open data and standards-centric architectures and ecosystems. Time to ante up.
